Cross country opens season at Utah Open

OGDEN,Utah -The Weber State men's and women's cross country teams opened action for the 2014 season Friday at the Utah Open. lt;br />The Wildcat men's team finished second in the meet with the women's team taking third. lt;br />On the women's side the Wildcats used the race as a workout as they continue to prepare themselves for bigger meets later in the season. WSU totaled 64 points in the meet to finish behind Boise State who had 35 and Utah who had 47. lt;br />The top finisher for the Wildcats was sophomore Ellie Child who finished 10th overall in the meet with a time of 15:13 on the 4K course. She was followed close behind by sophomore Hailey Ricks and junior Jamie Stokes, who finished 11th and 12th respectively. lt;br />Freshman Taylor Cox was 15th with Ashley Kealamakia taking 23rd, Amanda Ward taking 25th, Paige Dilmore taking 26th, Sara Mathewson taking 27th, and Britney Thornock taking 35th. lt;br />"Today's goal was to have a controlled hard work out and I didn't let them race at all," said WSU head coach Paul Pilkington. "I am happy with what they did and it just shows how coachable the girls because they executed the race plan." lt;br />On the men's side BYU won the meet with a total of 34 points, placing four runners in the top 10. WSU tied with Boise State with 45 points. lt;br />Senior Mike Hardy was WSU's top finisher, taking second overall with a time of 14:14.7 on the 6k course. Senior Trevor Ricks was 6th at 19:26.1 and Tyler Robinson was 13th at 19:40.4. lt;br />Senior Tip Worob finished 18th with Jason Kearns taking 19th, Brett Lechtenberg taking 23rd, and Joe Maloney taking 31st. lt;br />"The men did exactly what I wanted them to do," Pilkington said. "I let Mike and Trevor go with about 600 meters to go and I thought they finished well. I am really happy how close we were to BYU because they came in ranked 8th in the nation." lt;br />Weber State will next compete at the BYU Invitational next Saturday in Provo.
