Ellie Child finishes 9th, qualifies for NCAA meet

LOGAN, Utah Senior runner Ellie Child finished ninth overall, and the Weber State University women's cross country team finished seventh at the NCAA Mountain Regional Championships on Friday at Utah State's Steve and Dona Reeder Course. lt;br />The Weber State men's team finished 10th, led by Jason Kearns' 43rd place finish. lt;br />Child, the Big Sky Conference individual champion, finished the 6K course in 20:21.9, with her finish earning her an automatic qualifier spot for next weekend's NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., as one of the top four finishers whose team didn't qualify for the championship meet. lt;br />Hailey Whetten finished 16th with a time of 20:30.8, while Candace Sharp (21:26.2, 45th), Alice Neville (21:36.4, 52nd), and Paige Dilmore (21:50.4, 64th) rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats. lt;br />Top-ranked Colorado won the women's meet with a score of 35, with sixth-ranked New Mexico edging Air Force 109-111 for second place. lt;br />On the men's side, Kearns ran the 10K course in 32:02.5, while Luca Sinn (32:07.1, 46th), Preston Johnson (32:15.8, 51st), Dallin Leathem (32:24.1, 58th), and Tyson Green (32:47.4, 68th) were the scoring places for the Wildcats. lt;br />Top-ranked Northern Arizona won the race with 60 points, while second-ranked Colorado was second with 76. lt;br />The top two teams in each region earn automatic qualification for next weekend's NCAA Championships. At-large berths will announced on Monday.
